History

Camp GLOW (Girls Leading Our World) Grenada was established in 2012 through a collaborative effort between U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers and local Grenadian counterparts. The camp was inspired by the original Camp GLOW initiative, which began in Romania in 1995, aiming to empower young women by fostering self-confidence, leadership skills, and community engagement.

Since its inception, Camp GLOW Grenada has provided a week-long, immersive experience for girls aged 13 to 16, focusing on leadership development, self-esteem building, and life skills training. The program includes interactive workshops, mentorship sessions, and activities designed to encourage participants to become active, informed, and responsible citizens.
Over the years, the camp has positively impacted the lives of over 300 young women across Grenada. Many alumnae have pursued higher education and careers in various fields, including education, healthcare, law, youth development, aviation, customer service, and entrepreneurship. Notably, some former campers have returned to serve as counselors and directors, exemplifying the camp's commitment to sustainable leadership development.

Despite challenges such as the withdrawal of financial support from Peace Corps, Camp GLOW Grenada has continued its mission through local leadership and community support. The program remains dedicated to empowering young women, creating a sense of sisterhood, and cultivating future leaders who will contribute positively to Grenadian society.

Looking Ahead

As we continue to empower young women across Grenada, Camp GLOW recognizes the importance of inclusive youth development. In the near future, we aspire to expand our reach by introducing leadership and life-skills programming tailored specifically for boys (Guys Leading Our World). This initiative will build on our core values—equity, community, and personal growth—ensuring that all youth, regardless of gender, are equipped to lead with confidence, compassion, and purpose.
